October visit from Otterndorf

Over sixty of our members were involved in various ways over the nine day visit of our German friends. Some hosted, while others invited our guests for meals and outings, other members joined the coach trip to Sandringham and the excellent sight seeing tour led by our Chairman. Non hosting members involved themselves in the catering for the welcome and main social event when we prepared a fork buffet for over 60 hosts, guests and members.
Nick Perkins led the walk through Sheringham Park back to Sheringham and Helen Warwick kindly helped with the transport. Thanks to everyone who helped in any way,

It was good to see several members who could not be involved during the week attend the Shanty Concert in St Peters Church and farewell "get together" at the Jolly Tar where Leighton had prepared a display of excellent photos he had taken at the social.
He has now printed off numerous copies and sent them to members and many of our guests from Otterndrof. It was great to see so much involvement, friendships renewed and new ones made.
We now look forward to our return visit next May

Visit from Otterndorf 4 - 13th October - The Otterndorf Perspective

From the 4th until the 13th October, a group from Otterndorf of nearly 30 people (led by Vera Dieckmann) was allowed to stay with you and now we want to report our main impressions.

At the beginning many people were so nervous that they didn't want to go to England by plane, because of the attacks against the USA. Three people of our group even cancelled their journey and didn't come with us.
Nevertheless we all are very happy that we could enjoy the time in Sheringham. It was a very very great time and we learned much about the English way of life. We visited plenty of sights, for example Castle Acre, Sandringham, the church in Walsingham and the enormous cathedral of Norwich and of course the traditional activities of the twinning, like the Barn Dance, the guided walk around Sheringham with Peter Cox with a visit to the Sheringham museum and a farewell evening.

We often went by bus around the area and leaned much about the English history and development, especially about North Norfolk. Most of our group were youngsters, who came to England to learn the use of the language in daily situations. So we young people always tried to talk to many English people in our free time. We've found lots of new friends and hope to meet them some more times. In our host family we learned much about the normal days in English life and tasted different kinds of food. We didn't have any big problems and nobody is disappointed with his / her travel to Sheringham. The English Twinning Association had some very lovely ideas for our program.

Last but not least we want to say one more time "thankyou" to all the people for everything they have done for us. THANKYOU FOR THE WONDERFUL TIME. We hope you will come to Otterndorf some day to explore our area.

Best wishes from
Joachim & Judith Stolle and Marc Tiedemann on behalf of all the October Visitors

International DNA!

From our Otterndorf visitors I heard a most fascinating piece of news. I heard it both from Hans-Volker Feldmann, the deputy Bürgermeister, and from Margret Johanßen, grandmother of one of our visiting youngsters. Here it is!

Enthusiasts from the universities of Hamburg and London have set up a research project to find out if there are still "ethnic" Saxons and Angles living in Niedersachsen (lower Saxony) and Sussex, Middlesex and Essex. In theory they will be the descendants of the thousands of Saxons and Angles who fled the Wetlands of the North German coast and navigated their way down the channel in their little boats to the fertile and much drier south of England.

These early Saxons and Angles set off on this perilous journey as soon as they got wind of the fact that the Romans had finally left Britain for good.
The researchers have already begun their work, which consists of taking swabs from inside the mouths of their "guinea pigs". The "guinea pigs" are carefully chosen volunteers from families who have lived in research region for hundreds (yes hundreds!) of years.

From these swabs the researchers can establish the DNA of each volunteer to find out exactly how many descendants of these old tribes haven't moved very far in the last 1600 years!

I believe there will be a BBC programme about this project and also, I hear, a similar project on the Vikings. Do look out for it!

Twinning - Past, Present and Future

These recent weeks have been very active by way of personal contact between the Citizens of Sheringham and Otterndorf.
School pupils from Otterndorf visited their counterparts at Sheringham High School, speedily followed by a mixed party of children and adults from Otterndorf, staying at hosts homes, and enjoying a variety of activities arranged by the Twinning Association. As I write a group from Sheringham are taking advantage of the school half term holiday to visit their friends in Otterndorf, meanwhile the Twinning Committee are already planning for the next Association visit to Otterndorf in May 2002.

It is encouraging to witness these exchanges which strengthen the ties between our communities. The opportunity was grasped during the October visit for Officials of both towns to discuss plans for expanding the scope of these ties and particular emphasis was placed on schemes to encourage younger people to interchange.

November will see at the Annual General Meeting of our Association, an opportunity for current members to vote in the new Committee and officers. Whilst continuity of overall policy is obviously highly desirable, a new face or two on the committee can bring in fresh ideas and approaches, so anyone who feels they have something to contribute, can have the opportunity.

Some existing members of the existing committee served the association in its foundation years, and have returned after a break from Office. Other friends of Otterndorf have carried out stirling work for the Association on Committee in the past and are now enjoying a breather from these responsibilities. Whilst such a flow can be productive for new thinking, it remains fundamental that the aims of the twinning are not overlooked.

The variety of expertise individuals can bring has proved to be an immense boon to furthering our understanding of twinning. For example, people often do many hours of work which get little or no recognition and our Secretary is the most obvious candidate here.

In compiling "written snap shots" of aspects of Otterndorf for the local press I am indebted to the author and editors of the Otterndorf guide. I do recommend the Otterndorf Guide as good reading. It is a fascinating document taking the reader through old and new Otterndorf and its surrounding district. This work was originally compiled by the late Erna Kayser of Otterndorf and our well known Vera Dieckmann edited a third revision in 1995, which was translated by a former secretary of the Association Arthur Harden.
This illustrates the wealth of talent as commitment by a variety of people eager to see our twinning flourish. This history of Otterndorf has again had a reprint run, and is obtainable by application to the Secretary priced £2.50.

I have cited only one example of the many and varied activities taking place, and planned for the future. The potential is here to achieve much progress if the best talents can be harnessed to work together for the constitutions objectives. The foundations of firm long term friendships with the good folk of Otterndorf are already solidly in place. Let us build on them again at our Annual General Meeting

Editor's Notes

This is a larger issue than usual because of the reports on the visit from Otterndorf, the information for the AGM and the excellent articles and correspondence I have received from members. It is good to hear from members and your contributions are welcomed.
However we did not get news of the death of one of our members until 1 month after her funeral. If someone had told us then we could have paid our respects at the time. Please use this newsletter for good or sad news, and please don't assume that someone else must have told us already. We would rather have the same news 3 or 4 times over than not at all!

Copy for February newsletter should be in my hands by 15 February 2002
