WELCOME / WILLKOMMEN

Partnerstadt von Otterndorf - Twin Town of Ottendorf

WELCOME / WILLKOMMEN
Partnerstadt von Otterndorf - Twin Town of Ottendorf
CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE

I took over the chairmanship of SOTA in November 2003 after a 3 year period when the office was held by founder member, Brian Wilson.
The resignation of Vera Dieckmann the Otterndorf leader led to a period of inactivity in Germany until a successor could be appointed. The new chairman is Hans-Joachim Wohlleben who was the inspiration for the whole of twinning when he met Brian Wilson twenty years ago in Sheringham.
In October 2005 we invited a delegation from Otterndorf to discuss with us the way forward for twinning. The main reason is that we are all growing old together and a new approach is needed. In the event the two parties were very close in their thinking. We intend to build on the success achieved in trying to match groups of like interest such as the visits by the Shanty Choir and Sheringham Shantymen, the Wanna Deelpedders and the Lobster Potties, and more recently the visits by Rotarians. We wish to extend these exchanges to include music groups, sport groups ( anglers, cyclists, runners, ramblers etc.), artists, photographers. The list is only limited by my own imagination. So if you have ideas please contact us so that we can put you in touch with like groups in Otterndorf. This may or may not bring about an exchange. The way forward for youth groups is via the school system and youth hostels / activity centres and these we will support or facilitate.
We look forward to receiving a visit by Otterndorfers in April 2006 and a visit to Otterndorf in June, also in 2006.
Furthermore we are open to enquiries about any matters mentioned above on 01263 822382 or 823818

SHERINGHAM & OTTERNDORF
History of the Sheringham - Otterndorf Twinning Association
Geschichte der Verbindung Twinning Sheringham - Otterndorf
The Sheringham - Otterndorf Twinning Association came into being following extensive enquiries by both Sheringham and Otterndorf Town Councils to find a suitable partner town with which to enter into a twinning partnership.
Having established the suitability of the two towns to twin, Sheringham Town Council called a series of public meetings and at the last of them on 9th March 1987, the Sheringham - Otterndorf Twinning Association was formally elected.
The Twinning document was formally signed by the representative of both towns at official ceremonies, first at Otterndorf on 25th October 1987 and then in Sheringham on 14th April 1988
________________________________________
The affairs of the Association are conducted by a Management Committee consisting of twelve members, of which eleven are elected at the Annual General Meeting of the Twinning Association and the twelfth being the Mayor of the Sheringham Town Council or his representative, currently Councillor Noel Gant.
From the outset the Association has enjoyed enthusiastic support from the local community. This has taken many forms, the most important, perhaps, being participation in fund raising activities organised by the Committee, hosting German guests on their visits to Sheringham, and making return visits to Otterndorf. During the past ten years many visits to and from Otterndorf have been arranged by individuals and families. School visits have also been an important feature
In October 1997 the 10th Anniversary of the Twinning partnership took place and to mark the occasion the Otterndorf Twinning Association invited the Sheringham Town Council and members of the Twinning Association Management Committee to take part in a week of events in Otterndorf from 6th to the 11th October.
In April 1998 a party from Otterndorf Twinning Association visited Sheringham to mark the signing of the Twinning Charter on 14th April 1998. Both these events were most successful and further strengthened the friendship and understanding between the people of the two towns.
An English translation of the official Otterndorf Town Guide is also available at a cost of £2.50

An important trip to Otterndorf from Sheringham was in May 2000 when Otterndorf celebrated the 600th anniversary of receiving its City Charter. Sixty-nine of Sheringham Associations members joined in the festivities, which included taking part in the Jubilee Parade with our own float which depicted the Sheringham Town Clock
In October 2001 Otterndorfers joined in the celebration of Sheringham's 100 year anniversary of its Town Charter. .
In April 2002 we celebrated in Sheringham, the 15th anniversary of the signing of the twinning documents here. We welcomed our guests from Otterndorf and subsequently instead of having a Christmas dinner we now have an Anniversary Dinner.
June 2004 saw the resignation of Vera Dieckmann, Chairman and driving force of twinning in Otterndorf. Her able replacement is twinning founder Jochen Wohlleben, former vice-Chairman, appointed in Spring 2005..
Social events for Sheringham members take place regularly, details of which are published on the Events page of this site and in our printed periodic newsletter.
